What do fleas look like? At first glance they are small and flat, reddish-brown in color with a hard exterior shell. They have four small legs and two massive ones that allow them to jump from place to place.

If you have pets, you might see them crawling through their fur. Or you might find their feces, otherwise known as flea dust, which look like grains of blackish-red pepper. Fleas are most likely to feed on the head, neck, back or belly of pets, so those are the first places you should check if your pet has been itching.

Fleas don’t use humans as hosts, but they still may leave bites. If you’ve experienced itchy raised red bumps, you may want to wear white socks and walk along your carpet – and call a professional flea exterminator.
